"I am going to be a college professor."

My friend James Krause posted this on facebook, I had to share it with you, dear readers.

This is almost as sad a commentary on my life as the fact that I don't eat dinner until 9pm when I get home from teaching....

Emily, I often do the same (eat late). Today I will have a clif bar to hold off the hunger pangs until I get home at about 8:20 or so to eat real food. The bus ride home (from my side gig) is about 40 minutes and often I find myself daydreaming about hot food or hot chocolate as I drift in and out of a light sleep.

This was a bitingly delightful and painfully exact description of literary studies in grad school. I liked the robot chick who wants to be a college professor. Learning latin is fun though, and maybe I'll get to travel the world. If I get a job...

I keep having "what am I doing?" moments. The last was yesterday, when in my repeat of introduction to theory class I mentioned that modern psychology has moved on a great deal from Freud, and that he's more important as a historical figure. This prompted the professor to give a mini-lecture on how Americans don't understand him and such, and it made me realize how in a lot of way, the humanities find themselves decades behind... but, "I want to be a college professor."

SIGH. Oh, man, I'm so depressed now. Although I did laugh a little, because I'm pretty sure it's true that no one can frakin' stand Harold Bloom.
