Here is some homework, listen to the 4th movement of his 5th Symphony.
It is often referred to as his 'most Russian' piece, or even most characteristic of his work. Loud, brassy, bombastic, good stuff. Though there is some great moments of the Shostakovitch most know, he ends his last symphony in a way that, according to some critics, prefigures his death.

That is indeed loud, brassy, and bombastic...but not in a bad way, I think. Why do they say this piece prefigured his death? Did he die in a fiery automobile crash? Chernobyl?
Mateus, the video is a movement from the 5th symphony, the "typical" Shostokovich. Later this week I'll post the last movement of the 15th (his final symphony) which ends in a very curious manner considering Shostokovich's penchant for what you hear in this clip from the 5th symphony.
