Signs and Murmurs

I like to think that if the eponymous figure from Juan Rulfo's masterpiece Pedro Páramo spoke English and played in a British Indie Rock band, "Signs" by Bloc Party might be one of the songs he would sing to Susana San Juan. (Note, this one sounds great if you turn up the volume and let the synth envelope you).

Two ravens in the old oak tree, one for you and one for me
Bluebells in the late December, I see signs now all the time
The last time we slept together, there was something that was not there
You never wanted to alarm me but I’m the one that’s drowning now
I could sleep forever these days because in my dreams I see you again
But this time fleshed out fuller face in your confirmation dress
It was so like you to visit me to let me know you were ok
It was so like you visit me, always worrying about someone else
At your funeral I was so upset, so upset,
in your life you were larger than this
statuesque
I see signs now all the time that your not dead your sleeping
I believe in anything that brings you back home to me

So I just watched "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind." As I write this comment I think to myself, I suppose the only thing your post and that movie have in common are the fact that we can't get rid of our memories even if we try. They always come floating up to the surface and poke their fingers through the present to remind us they're there.

Hey Mateus, it's been some time since I've seen that movie, I remember enjoying it and thinking about it for a long time. Your example of how memories come creeping back is similar to how many people describe traumatic memories. But even non-traumatic memories subside and return from time to time. I think the key to understanding the ghost as a function of memory is, as you pointed out, the return.

At the same time, our memories (and even ghosts) sometimes lie to us in that they are never an accurate summation of the event remembered...or are they? Pablo, we could use your help here.
